College gets federal grant
$87,231 is designated to expand work study opportunities.

PCC recently received a grant of $87,231 from the U.S. Department of Education as part of the Federal Work Study Program to provide employment opportunities on campus to individual students, officials said.
A total of $200 million was provided nationwide under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 to increase the affordability of post-secondary education for needy students.
"Since students could work on campus, they would have flexible schedules and would not have to spend time traveling to their workplace" said Kim Miles, assistant dean of scholarships and financial aid.
Students who completed the FAFSA and are eligible for federal work study funds can work on campus, which increases their ability to transfer faster, according to Miles.
According to Miles, over 1,800 colleges nationwide received the funding from the grant; however the amount of money received varied greatly from college to college.
There was an extensive process that PCC had to go through in order to qualify for the funds, including federal reporting requirements, a mandatory step, according to Miles.
PCC started the reporting process in November, December, and January. "The grant increased the amount that the USDE could distribute in work study funds nationwide," said Miles.
"Although the grant will not assist in helping students get the classes they need in order to transfer, it will allow them to get a job allowing them to work on transferring to a four year school at the same time," said Miles.
