Renowned graphic artist, painter, comic book illustrator, set designer, and part time musician Gary Panter will be displaying his works in the Art Gallery, starting next week, as the PCC Artist in Residence.

Panter will also work with Visual Arts and Media Studies Professor Stan Baden to create an on-site drawing on one of the walls in the Art Gallery, according to Gallery Director Brian Tucker.

"He's one of the leading practitioners of what you might call 'art comics," said Tucker. "He is very well known for being essentially one of the key figures in creating graphic art that is associated with the punk movement in the 1970s, in particular in Los Angeles."

Panter has won three Emmy awards for his work on the set of "Pee-wee's Playhouse," been honored with a Chrysler Design Award and was one of the only four living practitioners in the "Masters of American Comics" exhibition that was put together by the Museum of Contemporary Art and the UCLA Hammer Museum in 2005.

He is also recognized for creating a punk rock cartoon character named Jimbo, whose adventures regularly appeared in Los Angeles' punk music paper Slash.

According to Tucker, every year the faculty invites a highly accomplished artist to display their work.

"We're looking to cover different kinds of approaches to art. [Panter] has had a significant career in the fine arts world, the illustration world and the design world, so he's likely to be interesting to an unusually wide range of students," Tucker said.

Panter's style of drawing is described as the "ratty line" where instead of having smooth, graceful, machine-like perfection in his illustrations, his strokes are jerky and scratchy.

Among the various mediums of art Panter has dabbled in, he also has a strong interest in psychedelic light and sound shows and has worked on album art for such music artists as Frank Zappa and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

A public lecture will be given by Panter on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Vosloh Forum followed by a reception in the Art Gallery.

In conjunction with his residency, he will also present a talk by artist Bob Zoell on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in room R122.

The closing reception for Panter, hosted by President Lisa Sugimoto will take place on Friday, March 19 in the Art Gallery. Following will be a presentation of an original artwork to the college by Panter.
