Dr. Barbara Freund knows the value of good health. Freund who is the new Dean of the Health Services Division at PCC is excited to start her journey.

A native of the East Coast, Freund comes from a strong background in geriatrics and gerontology at Eastern Virginia Medical School.

"The demographic of people is changing, individuals are living longer and we want to promote a better and healthier lifestyle," said Freund.

Promoting awareness within the community is crucial but Freund would like to see her division expand their services in other areas as well.

"If we can get our field clinics to go abroad that would be ideal. Whether it's going to Indian Reservations to promote better dental hygiene, or going to Central America to give mammograms, that is a priority," said Freund.

Bringing awareness not just to the student body but as well as outside communities is something the Health Sciences Division prides itself on.

But this process does start from the inside out. Many of the students training to be nurses get a hands-on approach for their trade.

"During the time we were having our flu vaccine distribution, we had our trainees give the shots. So not only do you have a healthier community but you have potential nurses gaining experience," said Freund.

"The nurses were knowledgeable and gentle. I think its neat that PCC has these services to offer not only to the students but also to community residents. They give us options for health care and that's important especially in times like these," said Patricia Williams, resident of Pasadena.

Freund also knows that funding is a major part of being able to accomplish these tasks.

"Funding is crucial and as a division we will look for many different options to better help achieve our goals," said Freund.

Freund also acknowledged that partnering with other successful organizations is a good way to expand their services throughout the community and beyond.
