In a split second, PCC photography student Jaklin Romine thought she would never be able to shoot another photograph ever again.

Three years ago Romine was in a brutal car accident leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.

"She hasn't seemed to let it stop her abilities as a photographer," said Daniel Carrillo a classmate of Romine.

"I admire Jaklin for her persistence and courage and accomplishing what she does, with her disability. I know that she was an inspiration to me and her fellow students," said art Professor Nancy Monk.

Romine is a former student of Monk.

Being confined to a wheelchair is a challenge for Romine, but it does not prevent her from her craft.

"A lot of things have changed from shooting on my own to needing to have an assistant," said Romine. "I can't use a tripod and I must have a steady hand."

Ever since Romine was in junior high all she thought about was capturing moments.

"Capturing moments is my big thing. It's always my main focus," said Romine.

She first started taking photos on a Polaroid. Experimenting with a Polaroid led her to love black and white photos.

"I fell in love with it," said Romine.

Romine's work entitled: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", was featured in the PCC Art Gallery show Spectrum over last summer.

"It pushes emotional boundaries," said Kate Hall a classmate of Romine.

According to Romine, it's a five-image series of lithographs. Romine develops and edits all of her own photos inside the studio rather than outdoors.

"I found her photography to be deeply personal and thought provoking," said Monk.
Romine prefers to work in the studio because she has more control of her work.

"She is talented and passionate about her art of photography," said Carrillo

Romine is currently finishing up the certificate photography program at PCC. Her next project is shooting a fashion series off campus for PCC students.

"She will always make art. Essentially it's who she is," said Hall.

I wish Jaklin Romane all the best with her photography but photographs and lithographs are not interchangeable, much less the same. (Continued…)
